NSJ Exchange Programme
Date: On going throughout 2008
Venue: In different Southern African countries
The aim of this programme is to expose journalists to other media institutions within the region to exchange expertise, skills, ideas and culture. It is also an avenue for establishing a network of skilled journalists, able to share and discuss experiences for the betterment of their profession. This programme will also avail exchange programme participants access to different types of democracies within the region and to further gain better understanding of governance in SADC. Through this programme it is hoped that journalists will gain experience different from their own house styles and be able to disseminate what they learn to colleagues upon their return home.

Details
1. Sending institution will provide the following:
- Nominate candidates to participate in the programme
- Indicate expectations
- Continue payment of staff salary while they are on the exchange programme
2. Host institution will provide the following:
- Give orientation session to the exchange participant
- Provide adequate training facilities for the exchange participant
- Integrate and socialize the exchange programme participant into the work culture and ethics of the organization
- Provide a and supervisor/mentor/trainer where applicable
- Monitor the exchange participants performance
- Report to NSJ on performance of the exchange participant
- Complete NSJ Exchange Programme Evaluation Form
3. Participant will provide the following:
- To identify their professional needs and expectations
- To be ready to learn or share skills
- To write and submit to NSJ weekly reports based on NSJ format
- To pay 45% of their travel costs to host institution
- Be prepared to stay with a host family, where applicable
4. NSJ will provide the following:
- Advertise and contact interested institutions
- Develop the format for the supervisor’s and participant’s reports
- Provide logistical support by arranging host family accommodation
- Align training content to meet participant’s needs
- To follow-up on participant’s performance at the end of the programme
- To assess programme impact
- Pay per diem to the participant for his/her upkeep
- Pay local transport to the participant
- Refund to the participant 55% of the cost of return travel to the host country
- To provide travel and medical insurance coverage
Eligibility: Journalists, both print and broadcast, interested in learning by being attached to other media institutions within the Southern African region.
Closing Date: Applications will be accepted throughout the year. Please note that consideration will be given to early application.
